The University of Kisubi (UniK) on 30th July 2026 successfully hosted a dissemination meeting for partner schools to share key findings, achievements, lessons learned, and recommendations from the 2025 Service Learning School Support Project, themed “Service That Builds Bridges: The Experience of the Service Learning (SL) School Support Project.”
The event brought together heads of institutions, Service Learning coordinators, and learners from Kitala Primary School, Kitala Secondary School, St. Cecilia Vocational School, and Mugezi Secondary School, reaffirming the strong partnership between UniK and its partner schools in advancing experiential learning and community engagement.
The report highlighted the transformative impact of Service Learning as an educational approach that connects classroom learning with meaningful community action. Through learner-led projects in environmental conservation, waste management, sustainable agriculture, science and technology innovation, entrepreneurship, and community well-being, schools were able to create positive change while nurturing leadership, teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, and civic responsibility among learners.
Collectively, the projects implemented across partner schools directly and indirectly impacted over 12,980 community members, demonstrating the power of education-driven community transformation. Successful initiatives included tree planting and greening activities, recycling projects, organic fertilizer production, hydroponics, water management systems, and innovative engineering solutions that addressed local challenges while promoting sustainable development.
While celebrating these achievements, participants also reflected on challenges affecting project sustainability, including limited resources, inadequate technical equipment, maintenance gaps, and the need for stronger community ownership. The discussions emphasized the importance of continuous mentorship, capacity building, monitoring, and stakeholder collaboration to sustain project outcomes.
As a way forward, participants resolved to further refine the report for official publication to inform policy and decision-making processes. The meeting also agreed to organize a joint training workshop on “Leadership for Sustainable Service Learning Projects” and to launch a consortium-wide “Plant a Vegetable” Project aimed at addressing nutrition gaps within School, families and communities served by the partner schools.
